What is Masquerading?

(AKA NAT: Network Address Translation)
(although NAT is really a subset of Masquerading)

it's a kind of proxying

"outbound" traffic is translated and remembered

"inbound" traffic is matched and untranslated

special action for some protocols (eg FTP)

breaks some protocols (eg some video systems)

broken protocols will sometimes work through proxy
