Monday 16:00 – The Linux Kernel as a teaching tool

Experiences with the Linux Kernel as a teaching tool.
At Northern Michigan University we use Linux widely in the classroom, and have done so for years. This paper will describe our experience with one such class. We teach operating systems classes in part by performing experiments on the kernel, measuring results, and then trying to explain them. This experiential technique contrasts strongly with the more standard lecture-discussion format. In this paper we describe the experiments, how they are integrated with the rest of the classwork, what can be learned from them, and conclude with some observations on the strengths and weaknesses of this technique.
