Monday 14:00 – Desktop Linux for deployment in Educational Institutions

Developing a desktop Linux system appropriate for deployment in any South Australian educational institution.
This paper will present the methodology that Troy Vodopivec and David Lloyd have used to create the desktop linux systems. It will present the following details:
  • distribution selection process
  • initial setup
  • selection of applications
  • configuration of the desktop
  • packaging for Microbits' production builds
  • deployment of desktop systems
Furthermore it will show some of the methods that Troy and David have employed to ensure the seamless integration of the desktop Linux machines with existing SMB (Windows) and AppleTalk networks.

About David Lloyd

David Lloyd is a member of LinuxSA and supporter of the Australian Unix and Open Systems User Group. He has given presentations both to LinuxSA and his local chapter of AUUG. He has worked for a number of years in the IT industry with people such as Richard Sharpe and a small, open source supportive company Tellurian.

He is currently employed by Microbits to help develop a desktop Linux system suitable for education, home and office use.
