Monday 11:00 – Experiences with OSS at Trinity College

Open Source Software (OSS) is central to Trinity College's educational objectives. Use of OSS has given us the freedom and the flexibility to emphasize the teaching of basic principles rather than training on particular software packages.
This paper covers the history, trials and successes of Trinity's initial OSS rollout. It also describes some more philosophical points on the choice of software. It is a pigeon pair to Tim Bell's other paper tomorrow which gives an in-depth description of issues relating to setting up a Linux teaching lab.
This talk is based on a paper coauthored with Richard Wraith, Director of Information Technology and Telecommunications at Trinity College, and was previously presented by Richard at ACEC2002 in Hobart.

About Tim Bell

Tim Bell is the System Administrator at Trinity College. Along with Richard Wraith, he has been involved in the setup and running of the Trinity network since 1996 and day-to-day IT operations since 1999. He has an Honours degree in Computer Science from the University of Melbourne, and also a sadly incomplete Ph.D. thesis.
